OUR WORK
  • Lowe’s Virtual Experience

iPad / iPhone / Android mobile / Android Tablet

Exciting, innovative and practical; that was our goal when we pitched Lowe's on a whole new way to engage their consumers. The end result was a phenomenal virtual experience that marries the traditional print medium (the Mother's Day Lowe’s flyer) with the most cutting edge visuals and interactions.

    THE CHALLENGE

Make an experience that truly engages and educates the user on the given product they are looking at in the flyer. We had to make sure these products were perfect, high quality doubles of the real appliances by LG. And we had to take a complex new experience, and make it simple for anyone to enjoy on multiple devices and operating systems (tablets and phones for both iOS and Android).

    About the Project

With any new technology there are inherent difficulties when explaining not only how to understand the technology but also why it's useful. From an understanding point of view we minimized the friction by creating a very clean experience. From the simple scan of a QR code (or entering the easy to remember url) to reaching a landing page that will detect your device and help you download the appropriate version (iOS or Android), to the in app tutorial, we made it simple. We made a compelling practical case by allowing the user to throw the flyer down, look at a product through the device's camera, and explore products like never before. We brought the showroom into people's homes.

    THE RESULTS

This engagement couldn't have been a bigger success critically and with the customers that Lowe's and LG wanted to engage. From a critical point of view, the press release and several interviews that Lowe’s and Red Piston did about the experience were syndicated nationwide. Many radio, TV and newspaper interviews generated huge praise and buzz for both Red Piston for it’s accomplishments and Lowe’s for green lighting such a innovative approach to Augmented Reality and print. Thousands of users downloaded the iOS and Android versions and the user's reviews tell the story of their experience, with five stars across the board.

  • smart play

    iPad

This internal project was the debut of Red Piston’s first children’s app. Smart Play lets children be as creative as they like while teaching them to recognize words and objects in a familiar environment.

    FEATURES:

    - Fun and interactive gameplay
    - A collection of 12 exciting scenes ranging from a city to an ocean
    - Variety of objects within environments allowing for extra creativity
    - Opportunities to save and share your creations to your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch or send through email
    - Professionally recorded sounds, music and voice-overs throughout the game
    - Frequent updates along with the addition of more scenes and packages coming soon!

    THE CHALLENGE

With Smart Play our biggest challenge was to create a children’s app that had the right combination of entertainment, enjoyment and educational elements. We had to keep refining the concept and testing with children to make sure that it was easy to use, but still contained enough 'surprises' to keep them engaged and entertained.

    About the Project

The idea for Smart Play originated from observing our own children and relatives and how they embrace technology. We also recognized that the iPad is a terrific medium to both educate and entertain. With this knowledge we decided to create an app that would offer children a fully interactive experience. Smart Play offers bright and playful worlds that let children be as creative as they like while at the same time teaching them to read as well as recognize words and objects in familiar environments. Packages of 4 scenes can be purchased for $0.99 or all of the scenes can be purchased for $1.99. As for any future plans, we'd like to keep adding scenes and extend the platform into other properties.

    THE RESULTS

Although Smart Play is still relatively new, the amount of positive feedback from children and parents alike has confirmed our heightened expectations and research.

  • puma faas

    iPad / iPhone

Fun, informative and simple to use - the PUMA Faas app began as a promotional app to get the word out there about PUMA's brand new Faas models but then developed into an amusing and interactive camera app that acts as an exaggerated simulator of the shoes benefits.

    THE CHALLENGE

It was difficult to properly simulate the exaggerations that PUMA wanted to showcase in the camera function of the app where they wanted it to seem like the person was going extremely fast (the shoes are made to give you great speed when wearing them). PUMA also wanted to ensure they provided enough information about the shoes within the app as well and have a link to the PUMA shoe store - so we needed to ensure we incorporated all of these elements.

    About the Project

PUMA initially contacted us back in February 2011. Since then, we have worked closely with them to create and build a unique app that is both entertaining and educational in regards to obtaining information about the product that is being promoted (specifically the new PUMA Faas shoe line). It took many attempts in order to get the simulation just right and to fully obtain the desired "Warped" effect of someone running at high speed. After mastering the effects of the camera and adding in the additional options to link out to the PUMA store and additional information on the product, the app was ready to go to the App store.

    THE RESULTS

Through much research and trial and error the desired effect was achieved dynamically through some proprietary code created in house. The final product was enjoyed by hundreds of users at a Puma event and the feedback was positive. People find the effect fun, cool and sometimes hilarious.

  • banzai blowfish

    iPad / iPhone

Wanting to truly create a fully featured iOS game, Red Piston created an internal project to create the next big hit on the app store.

    FEATURES

    - Universal compatibility! Play on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch (No need to pay again for a iPad version)
    - Retina support enabled for iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4th Gen and iPad users
    - 5 Stages with different themes - Rock, Snow, Night, Water, Volcano
    - 48 Levels of fun physics action puzzles
    - Unique hand-drawn graphics throughout the game
    - Share your score via Facebook, Twitter and email
    - Compete world-wide for the top score on Game Center

    THE CHALLENGE

With hundreds of new games coming out for iOS on a daily basis, we had our work cut out for us in terms of creating a game that would stand apart. Along with wanting to create something truly original, Red Piston also saw the value in creating something that is reminiscent of the current kings of casual gaming such as Angry Birds. We wanted to make a game that is fun for all ages, genders and truly spanned demographics. We also wanted the game to look good and run great on any iOS device (iPhone, iPod and iPad) so we decided to create the game as a 1 time download that would work for any Apple device.

    About the Project

This was an intensive 5 to 6 months of constant work by Red Piston's programmers and illustrators to create a fun physics based puzzle/action game with a very unique fun visual presentation. Built in a 3D engine but presented in 2D with a bit of trickery, the game included an industry-leading physics engine and a robust animation system to add impressive animations. The game had dozens of level objects the player would use to propel the player (the blowfish) around to ultimately crash through a cage to save the townspeople. The game is priced at a huge value of $1.99 worldwide for a game that has 48 levels, Game Center support, Twitter and Facebook integration and support for all Apple devices.

    THE RESULTS

With tens of thousands of downloads in the first few weeks and global acclaim the game was eventually even picked up by Apple themselves and featured around the world as a "new and noteworthy" title, "hot game" and even in Canada as the game of the week with a full panographic image featured in iTunes and on the app store on the iPad. The game was also the top puzzle game in around 10 countries at one point and dozens of favourable reviews on the top gaming sites. The game's loyal fanbase was treated to 6 updates, addressing their needs requested by email and bringing the total to 48 levels. The success has led to the release of the game on the Mac Store to be played on Mac computers and an Android version shortly after.

  • SSGEAR: Run With the Bulls

    iPhone only

As the second game created for Speed and Strength, this game was created to build upon the first game's huge success but be even more exciting with one-touch controls and destructive power-ups that unleash raging bulls.

    THE CHALLENGE

Create a fast paced motorcycle game where you have to avoid obstacles in the road like construction cones , cars and signs on the sides. The objective was to make the game easy to play and hard to master with intuitive one-touch controls and cool power-ups that send raging bulls running ahead of the bike destroying all in their path. Also, as apposed to the first game, this game needed two highly detailed cities to drive through and they had to provide a lengthy amount of driving time.

    About the Project

Having witnessed a remarkable world-wide reaction with the first Speed and Strength game with over 700,000 downloads and a 400% increase in web traffic, Red Piston was tasked to do an even more ambitious game. Although not a true sequel to the first Speed and Strength , Speed and Strength: Run with the Bulls was built upon the quick addictive twitch gaming but in a totally new and original way. The controls are simple as you slide your finger left and right to control the bike to avoid obstacles, also increasing your bull power-up meter. Once the bull meter is filled you can unleash the fury of a crazed bull who runs in front of your bike tossing aside cars and other obstacles like toys. The game was built from scratch upon the same engine used in the first game but of course heavily modified as the gameplay is drastically different and graphics and levels are more impressive. There are two huge cities bustling with cars driving around and construction crews through-out to avoid. You can choose your racing gear and bike before the game starts (from Speed and Strengths lineup) and it's all reflected while you play the game.

    THE RESULTS

Just as the first game, there are hundreds of copies downloaded daily and a huge increase in brand awareness and web site traffic. The game is said by many to be even more exciting and fun than the first iteration!

  • Top 7 : Smart Community

    iPad only

To really showcase innovation in Windsor to the representatives of ICF, Red Piston Inc. was commisioned to take all the showcased IT firms and present them in a truly interactive and entertaining way. We were given total creative freedom to take this content (text, images and video) and bring it to life in a way that hasn't been done before in order to impress the delegates from ICF further.

    THE CHALLENGE

Take the quality assets that existed for this event including text, images and video and showcase the featured businesses in a way that was intuitive and also gives a sense of how much innovation exists in Windsor. This robust impressive system needed to be self contained and required a uptime of 100% meaning it can and will never suffer from any stutters or technical issues at all. Additionally since it was so content heavy we decided to mix the 3D engine with traditional iOS User Interface elements. We had only 4 weeks to complete this project even with content that was not delivered until the last week, meaning we had to create a dynamic system that can be populated easily with content at the last second.

    About the Project

To showcase the innovative companies around town we took the initiative to create a really unique way to display these locations by featuring them on a totally 3D rendered version of the greater Windsor/Essex area, complete with 3D rendering of the locations buildings and key locations in this area. This iPad application allowed the user to drag their finger left and right to spin the 3D rendered version of Windsor/Essex, they can pinch to zoom in and out and truly admire the details of the city in 3D. Each major location also had a info button that if pressed would bring up a whole plethora of information and content such as a gallery of pictures and also videos and text. The whole system also had a timed system to only unlock some videos on certain days to correspond with the actual tour the delegates were taken on of Windsor/Essex.

    THE RESULTS

The delegate of ICF as well as top city officials (including the mayor) and the client were unanimously impressed by the results achieved in such a short amount of time. People found the system very informative but also very entertaining and exciting to use. Additionally we have been asked by the client to make a streaming version to be downloadable from iTunes and to present the app to ICF delegates in New York.

  • Knowledgeview News Aggregator

    iPhone only

Competing on the world stage with the like of AP and Reuters , UK based Knowledgeview provides a robust news aggregation and publishing system for major newspapers around the world. The service eventually publishes the news stream as an XML stream that can be outputted and viewed as a website. Although they provided services to create websites and mobile sites from their information, they did not have native mobile solution like AP , Reuters and other services. Red Piston pitched Knowledgeview a robust client application that can pull in information from their XML feed and present it in a professional , pleasing manner.

    FEATURES:

    - Offline browsing
    - Sharing articles via email, Twitter and Facebook
    - Adding to favorites
    - View daily pages
    - Custom channel view
    - Search using keywords, authors or subjects

    THE CHALLENGE

Having been one of the first projects Red Piston worked on as a company, the challenge was to create something comparable to what has been produced for huge news services such as BBC, AP, ABC, Reuters and others. The application as per the client needed to access all current news stories with all content including text and pictures and also references to related stories and present them in a smooth, intuitive way. Also the client had asked that the app have a feature to save channels(or sections e.g. Sports, Current News, Business) on the device for offline viewing. There also had to be support for three different languages (english, french and arabic) a video section, newsprint section with scans of the current paper (that the user can pinch to zoom and drag around with their finger) and most complex of all is that the whole application project needed to be easily modified to be used by any publication that would want to use it (and current or future Knowledgeview client).

    About the Project

This was a project that most mobile development houses would need close to half a year to develop and we had to create it in 4 months with a high degree of quality. It allowed the user to save news articles content within an internal SQL server and the images were all saved as well on the device. The whole project had a easy to use configuration file that allowed the client to feed any compatible data into the app by simply specifying a different URL link to the feed. The whole application was made to be easily skined as well so the client can resell the app over and over to different publications and change everything to match their branding.

    THE RESULTS

The client was very impressed with the end result and they had a whole new product to offer their customers. They already have 2 major publications using the system and they were able to easily skin the graphics and configure the framework built by us to accommodate these 2 customers. The client was impressed enough with what we accomplished for iPhone that they commissioned us to do a prototype iPad version that featured a whole different layout but leveraged what was done with the iPhone system and of course the same API provided by Knowledgeview.

  • davo photo 3d

    iPad / iPhone

Taking the high quality models created from Davo technology we were tasked to show off the end result by providing a way to interact in full 3D with the 3D models. They wanted a way to view the models from any angle by moving the camera by touch on the iPhone and iPad and using the mouse for the PC and Mac versions.

    THE CHALLENGE

Creating a 3D portfolio based on really high fidelity models (with high definition textures) and have a intuitive way to have the user smoothly rotate and zoom to appreciate the quality of the models scanned in by Davo's technology. The models have to look as close to the original product exported into the 3D engine from Maya but also run smoothly on everything from a iPhone 3G, iPad 1st Generation to the latest iPhone and iPad and iPod touch as well as most PC and MAC. The whole project also needed to somehow incorporate a cool wow factor with extra interactivity.

    About the Project

Using the same engine we used for Banzai Blowfish and both Speed and Strength games we programmed a custom control and UI code to allow the user to appreciate the real life models scanned in by Davo. We were asked not only to create this portfolio piece to work as a Universal application that works on all iOS devices (all of apples touch based devices, iPhone,iPod,iPad) but also we needed to create a version (with different controls based on the mouse) for PC and also MAC computers. With iOS we created a unique control style that enabled the user to drag their finger left and right to rotate around the models horizontally and drag their finger up and down to rotate vertically around the model. You can also pinch in and out with 2 fingers to zoom in and out of the models. The PC and MAC used the mouse to scroll around and scroll wheel to zoom in and out. Along with just rotating we also created a toggle system that would turn on and off some pot lights in the platform that the models resided on. And to take it a step further we incorporated the band them that matched the models (who looked like a hip young band) and created a system were by based on who your looking at , it will play a musical track sample based on the instrument they are holding.

    THE RESULTS

The project was taken by the client (Davo) and shown to their perspective clients (to sell them on their 3D scanning technology) and they were totally impressed with not only the models but also the portfolio piece itself , created by us. It had not only met but exceeded the required wow factor that Davo wanted to instil in their technology. Davo was so impressed we have been commissioned to create a more feature packed version of the portfolio with even more interactivity and also to create a 3D web experience for their web presence.

  • mind wave 2

Mind Wave is a unique brain wave application that puts you to a certain state of mind. These Isochonic tones help to improve the learning process, relieve headaches, help you fall asleep, relax and even get rid of bad habits like smoking. - Control background volume
    - 4 beautiful background loops specifically designed for this app.

    - Can be used with dock! Unlike binaural beats.

    THE CHALLENGE

Create a Health & FItness app that can act as a vehicle of relief and as a boosting agent that will achieve desired reactions/states. The goal was to take full advantage of isochronic tones and incorporate them into an app that would allow the public to benefit from this helpful and relaxing technique that stimulates your brain waves.

    About the Project

We recognized there was a niche market out there that could and would really utilize an app such as this. We realized there was a definite need that could be filled through the creation of Mind Wave because there was no other app out there that existed that met this unique need. There was plenty of research conducted and consulted in order to ensure we created this app properly, safely and in the most beneficial and consumer-focused manner. Mind Wave was created in-house by one of the Red Piston partners, Jakub Koter, who came up with the entire concept. The app was built to be easy to use, simple, but highly functional to fulfill the multiple purposes consumers were seeking out.

    THE RESULTS

Mind Wave was highly successful and we have received a lot of feedback in support of the app and also many suggestions for new Isochonic beats to benefit certain issues/problems consumers may experience in their day to day routines. We continue to update the app on a regular basis and expand our range of binaural offerings to meet the demands of the public. We believe the app will continue to deliver strong benefits to its users and will hopefully help a lot more people down the road.

  • angry octopus

    iPad only

Angry Octopus: A Children's Relaxation Story by Lori Lite, has been brought to life as an interactive animated iPad book experience. Children relate to the Angry Octopus in this story as the sea child shows the child how to take a deep breath, calm down, and manage their anger.

    THE CHALLENGE

Enhance a hand-illustrated and educational story with multimedia effects and interactive elements, suitable for an iPad.

    About the Project

Lori Lite's book, Angry Octopus, a winner on the show Dragon's Den, not only is an educational and helpful tool to aid in calming children's nerves and anger but it is also a beautifully illustrated and captivating visual story for both the parent and their child. It only made sense to bring this compelling and imaginative story into the interactive app world.

An effective stress and anger management technique known as "progressive muscular relaxation" focuses awareness on various muscle groups to create a complete resting of the mind and body. The engaging story of the Angry Octopus quiets the mind and relaxes the body so your child can let go of anger and fall asleep peacefully.

    THE RESULTS

We really believed that bringing this book onto the iPad platform would not only open up Lori Lite's target market but it would significantly showcase the many capabilities and strengths of the iPad as an interactive reader. We're also happy to see that Angry Octopus is making a difference with readers. As one App Store reviewer said "I am a mom of three very different kids. One ADHD, one with SPD and one adopted. Lots of different things. I am also a LCSW and and Reg Play Therapist who works with children ages 2 and up. I have used this app with some of my younger kids with anxiety and anger and they liked it a lot."

  • moodfood

    iPhone only

What Colour is Your Hunger? When you tell MoodFood what colour matches your mood, it will seek out restaurant suggestions based on foods that best match the emotional response to your selected colour. People always say trust your gut, now, you can let your gut trust your mood.

    THE CHALLENGE

Develop a unique application to tap into the vast YellowPages API database in a simple, engaging and useful way, as part of the 2010 Canpages (now YellowPages) API Contest.

    About the Project

Mood Food – a free download for iPhone – lets you swipe through a gallery of colour swatches each representing a mood. For example, red is associated with energy, excitement and adventure.

    SOCIALLY-POWERED RESEARCH

To start off the development process, we did some basic research breaking down colours and psychological moods attributed to them, We formulated a chart of mood and colour, then that chart helped us build the logic and application database for the app. Even before that was done, we did some studies with our Facebook group, where we tested our theories and asked our followers ‘how this colour and this mood match’, ‘what colour or mood goes with this food, what mood with that food’.

Our crowd-sourcing technique worked well for gathering business intelligence. We tried to make our own list first, asking ‘is Thai food, like, purple or orange?’ There were in-house sessions to bounce those ideas around, and when we brought it to the Facebook group, many of our ideas were validated and a couple of exceptions were identified. And the rest is history.

    THE RESULTS

Mood Food was the winner of the 2010 Canpages API Contest, and has been featured in both local and national newspapers, A Channel and CTV news, and on various blogs as a must-have download. We are extremely proud to be able to provide a solution to the "Where should we eat?" question, and helping users discover restaurants near them that will perfectly complement their current mood.

  • owl city

    iPhone only

Official Owl City/UMG application for fans in support of Ocean Eyes. Features a remix component where users can remix two Owl City songs: vocals, percussion, instruments, etc.; a music showcase, videos, tour info, and a connect section, where Twitter feeds and direct connections to the artist are featured.

    FEATURES

    - Audio Integration

    - iTunes Purchase Links
    - Multitouch Photo Gallery
    - Twitter Integration

    THE CHALLENGE

Build an interactive and unique fan app to both promote Owl City as a band and to help push their album mainstream. The app was to be created as a way to let fans interact with the band and their music in a totally different way than they are normally able to get from just looking up the band online or listening to their music.

    About the Project

Red Piston first became involved with Universal Music Group through a pro-active attempt at communication with the American music moguls. Red Piston originally contacted UMG with the idea of this app back in late 2009. Uncertain if UMG would have any interest at all in bringing their artists into the mobile/app universe, we pushed to showcase what exactly we could offer them in terms of an interactive fan app for not only this band, but as a platform for additional artists.

Owl City's Management responded almost immediately and quickly brought Universal Music Group onboard. From there began our business relationship with the international music company responsible for such artists as Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Akon.

    THE RESULTS

The Owl City app spiralled into the creation of multiple fan apps after our initial work with UMG. After the success of this original fan app 'that started it all' we have now gone onto create several apps for artists such as: Kelly Rowland, Kid Cudi, Lifehouse,Rise Against, Melanie Fiona and Lil' Wayne.
